The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today is calling upon the Allied War Veterans Council of South Boston—the organizers of Boston’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade—to remove the name of the saint from the March 18th parade.

A parade named in honor of the saint who brought the Catholic Faith to Ireland will now showcase homosexual groups who not only express pride in rejecting the Faith of Saint Patrick, but who castigate its moral code as bigotry, hatred, and homophobia.

It will also feature politicians who repudiate Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life and the integrity of marriage, and who believe that Catholics have no moral or legal right to preserve the Christian character of Saint Patrick’s Day.

The organizers of the anti-Catholic carnival on Broadway should stop misappropriating, exploiting, and cheapening the venerable name of our patron saint for an event which advertises those who repudiate the beliefs of Saint Patrick. The March 18th parade, as presently constituted, is an insult to Saint Patrick, and an affront to all faithful Catholics.

  1. Actually it’s the Evacuation Day/ St. Patrick’s Day Parade. March 17 has long been a holiday in Suffolk County, Boston,Revere, Chelsea and Winthrop. Most major U.S. cities have their St. Patrick’s Day Parades in downtown areas free of politicians. I can see the parade being in South Boston as Dorchester Heights was where Evacuation Day happened in 1776. However debatable for South Boston to claim to be the most Irish area. Other areas of Boston and suburbs have larger Irish-American populations. In years past Southie has had a significant Lithuanian and other ethnicities population along with Irish-Americans. Today South Boston’s demographics are getting like Back Bay,Cambridge or Allston. Many long time families sadly have moved out due to high rents. The politicians and self servers take away from St. Patrick’s Day around here. Happy St. Patrick’s Day !

  2. Why don’t the special interest groups petition to march in the Caribbean Day parade or other parades? Why do they yearly make a scene on St. Patrick’s Day? The political self servers who run the parade probably couldn’t find Ireland on a map.

  3. FYI: The evacuation of Evacuation Day took place on Long Wharf on St. Patrick’s Day, 1776.

It’s all about being “in your face.”
