CARDINAL O’MALLEY REFUSES TO
SPEAK OUT ON AWARD TO MARTY WALSH
The Massachusetts Pro-Life Coalition, an alliance of eight Bay State pro-life organizations, is criticizing Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the Archbishop of Boston, for his refusal to intervene, or even speak out, on the scandalous decision of Boston’s Catholic Memorial School to honor the fanatical pro-abortion U.S Secretary of Labor, Marty Walsh.
On April 1st, at the school’s Spring Gala fundraising banquet, Catholic Memorial will present the Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice Medal to Walsh, who once said he wanted to make Boston a sanctuary city for abortions, should Roe v. Wade be overturned.
Last week, in response to inquiries from the Catholic News Agency and the New Boston Post, Terrence Donilon, the Communications Secretary of the Archdiocese of Boston, told reporters, “I need to refer you back to CM.”
Now, a member of the Coalition has received a response from the Cardinal’s Office. Attorney Robert W. Joyce — the former President of the Catholic Memorial Alumni Association — wrote to Cardinal O’Malley on February 28th, reminding him that Walsh has “publicly, passionately and consistently promoted both abortion and same sex marriage.”
In a letter dated March 16th, Rev. William Joy, the Vicar for Clergy of the Archdiocese, replied to Joyce on behalf of the Cardinal. Joy said the “Archdiocese was not involved with the planning of the event” and “Catholic Memorial is a separately incorporated Catholic school with its own board of Directors entrusted with oversight of the institution.” He did not reveal whether O’Malley had accepted the school’s invitation to attend the Gala.
In response, Joyce said, “Pontius Pilate washed his hands and declared himself innocent of the blood of Jesus Christ. Today in this matter, Cardinal O’Malley is effectively washing his hands and declaring himself innocent of the blood which will, foreseeably, be shed as a result of CM’s decision—the blood of aborted children of God.”
Massachusetts Pro-Life Coalition spokesman William Cotter, the President of Operation Rescue Boston, made the following comment: “This evasive, legalistic and Pharisaical response to the legitimate concerns raised by Robert Joyce has been used before. In an infamous case from 2015, the Cardinal’s top aide, Father Robert Kickham, gave the same bureaucratic reply to the whistleblower who wrote to O’Malley about the notorious sexual predator, the now defrocked ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. Kickham argued jurisdictional issues, telling the Rev. Boniface Ramsey that McCarrick’s crimes did not fall under the purview of either the Archdiocese of Boston or the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, which was headed by O’Malley.”
Cotter concluded, “This dodge by Cardinal Sean is becoming tiresome. If the Cardinal can speak out about George Floyd, police reform and the death penalty for the terrorist Marathon bomber, he can speak out about a scandalous betrayal of the innocent unborn in his own archdiocese.”
The Massachusetts Pro-Life Coalition, founded in 2017, brings together Operation Rescue Boston, Mass Resistance, the Massachusetts Alliance to Stop Taxpayer Funded Abortions; the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund, the Boston Church Militant Resistance Chapter, the Boston Chapter of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants; American University Women for Life; and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts
