ACTION ALERT!
STOP PUB OWNER FROM NAMING BAR THE HAIL MARY
On Monday evening, May 5th, the City of Boston Licensing Board will hold a public hearing, via Zoom, on the application for a liquor license by the new owner of the former Telegraph Hill pub at 289 Dorchester Street in South Boston.
In an apparent Doug Flutie football reference, the new owner plans to rename the bar The Hail Mary.
This sacrilegious expropriation of the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary is absolutely inappropriate.
It is profoundly disrespectful to the Mother of God, and is gratuitously offensive to the beliefs and sensibilities of Catholics, and of other Christians.
It demeans and trivializes, for purposes of commercial marketing, one of the most sacred names in the Christian lexicon.
It is a textbook example of cultural misappropriation.
Please contact, immediately, the following public officials who represent South Boston, and urge them to oppose the name change at Monday’s Licensing Board hearing:
State Senator Nick Collins Nick.Collins@masenate.gov 617-722-1150
State Representative David Biele David.Biele@mahouse.gov 617-722-2220
City Councilor Ed Flynn ed.flynn@boston.gov 617-635-3203
You may contact the Boston Licensing Board to register your opposition at licensingboard@boston.gov and at 617-635-4170.
If you wish to participate, via Zoom, in the Licensing Board hearing Monday evening, you may log in, just before 7pm, at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84156408565.
Please help us stop this sacrilege! Express your outrage to the City of Boston!
Thank you. ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏ ͏
South Boston has changed dramatically in the past 20 years or more. Like many other Greater Boston areas, its been turned from a longtime multi generational neighborhood into one of high rents and loss of neighborhood connection. Its part of the San Franciscoization of Boston. It’s either high rent or high crime, no room for the working class. Southie or as the high rent new comers call it SOBO is turning into the land of high priced coffee shops and people who rarely even say hello to each other. I remember Castle Island as being a safe wonderful place to spend a day. You knew Boston as a whole was in decline when the last mayor’s election saw over 70% of registered voters not even voting. It’s now led by an educated capetbagger idiot who talks in riddles.
